“When a man will take a woman…” (Devarim 24:1)

It is a mitzvah to follow the Torah and the Sages’ guidelines for the marriage ceremony.

We are fortunate to have Torah guidelines for all aspects of marriage. The Rambam (Hilchos Ishus 15:19-20) teaches the obligations of a husband to a wife and a wife to her husband:

The Husband’s Obligations

-He should honor and love his wife.

-He should spend money on her behalf (according to his means).

-He should not impose excessive fear upon her.

-He should always speak to her gently, without sadness or anger.

The Wife’s Obligations

-She should honor and revere him.

-She should follow his instructions.

-She should follow his desires.

-She should push away that which he dislikes.
