“On the first day of the seventh month, you shall rest, with a remembrance of blowing, a holy day.” (Vayikra 23:24)

It is a mitzvah to celebrate Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, on the first and second day of Tishrei, and refrain from all work on these days.

Rosh HaShanah is the anniversary of the creation of the universe. We rejoice with the world that Hashem created for us, and we tremble at the annual review of our deeds which takes place on this day. We prepare for this great day of judgment with Selichos prayers and we do teshuvah and give tzedakah to influence our case for the positive.
