I would have to disagree with Rabbi Avi Shafran. I do believe that sports provide children with a healthy enviroment for their inner development as well as their physical one. The development of friendships, discipline, understanding of hard work, self-knowledege and self esteem, take place in the fields, courts and swimming pools. One cannot deny this simple truth. Yes, there are moments of violence in the world of sports. Nevertheless, there are many more moments of joy and triumph of the human spirit, that ultimate leads us to understand and praise of G-d for having given us those abilities. Therefore, I must say that, as a Jew, I understand that sports is a wonderful way to praise G-d because I am developing the abilities He has given me. - A. S. -0/1-/2002
