Thank you Mr. Raska for an article that is to the point and gives the Jewish people a pride in their leadership. Yes, the election was selected not elected but Josepeh Lieberman was a candidate for the people and by the people. I felt so proud sitting and listening to him on one of his apperances in Daytona Beach, my heart was filled with Jewish pride....Your article was inspirational to me and I am sure to many who have had the pleasure to read it. Thank You, Thank You......

Thank you, Mr. Raskas, for a very insightful and thought-provoking article. While I must confess that I am too busy to do very much reading of current events, I had not seen any such commentary as yours. It was very welcome.

A masterpiece of an article! Although it is not the main topic of this article, the piece about how Rav Eliezer Silver, answered back about the Jew who did not, unfortunately, have the understanding of the whole picture, is as applicable today as it was then.

Although I would like to belive Mr. Raskas' observation is correct, and living abroad I did not get to observe the electorate first hand, I did hear annecdotal evidence at least of people explicitly stating they would not vote for Gore because of the possibility of a Jew becoming President. Also, racists and anti-semites have at least been shamed into being quiet in America, which means we will never really know why people did not vote for Gore. After all, conventional wisdom did say he should have won, even with the Nader factor.

Yes, I agree that Joe Lieberman's selection to run was a plus for the the Jewish People - all Jews, not just the Orthodox. To make him a standard bearer for Orthodoxy alone is not only incorrect, but it denigrates those Jews who supported him who are not Orthodox. This statement by Mr Raskas reflects the state of relations between the various Jewish sects in this country. If he were to say everything he he did say, and simply refer to the Senator as a practicing Jew, all would be well with the non-Orthodox: but to claim him as "Our Boy" shuts out the rest of the Jewish Community. Never mind, the others of us also consider Joe as our boy, too - and we are very proud of him.

The article was completely analytical, interesting, truthful and it hit the subject right on the head point blank. Paradoxically, the topic was well written and easily comprehended. Many points were illuminated and again stated that were most agreeable with any individual who views situations with great perception and understanding of the proper mannner in which to evaluate. Thanks for the article.

If Mr. Raska places such a high value on one's integrity, why did he merely gloss over the convenient change of hear re:vouchers, affirmative action, etc. To do what is perceived to be politically expedient, in opposition to long held views, is not what I would call 'a man of integrity's' behavior.

No comment about the article. that's a matter of opinion. Just thrilled to see a former kehilla boy in the paper. Do the names burt and tzvi mean anything to you?

Kudos to Mr. Raskas for his well developed thoughts on the campaign of Senator Lieberman. As mentioned the initial barage of interest in Orthodox Judaism quickly subsided and Senator Lieberman was judged on his merits as a political candidate and public servant. Senator Lieberman behavior throughout the campaign was and continues to be a true kiddush Ha-shem as an Orthodox Jew in a secular world.

I disagree with any kind of adulation of Lieberman He is a political hack. Called the conscience of the Senate;he made a speech deploring clinton's behavior, fell short of asking him to resign, voted against conviction, telling the Washington Post that Clinton has done much for the Democratic party and for the good of the party he must remain as president. He accepted the call from Gore to be vp which show his lack of character to even consider being on the ticket with this man who was a liar, a clintonesque figure and a chameleon. He changed his positions on issues, he courted Maxine Waters to get her support, he gave his own interpretation of a Torah Jew,on the Larry King Show saying different rabbis have different points of view. In an attempt to suppport his liberal views on social issues. He turned a blind eye to Hollywood excesses as they were big contributors.William Bennett with whom he had worked on the cultural debris disseminiated from the Hollywood crowd expressed his disappointment and distanced himslef from him. The media were impressed with his religious speeches because his agenda on abortion, affirmative action, school choice, homosexual issues agree with their views. His statements during the 36 day difficulties brought on the country by Gore the lines fed him by the Gore team. He is a whiny , wimpy, spineless politico. His remarks re: Ashcroft were an embarrassment; saying it wasn't religious profiling and Ashcroft was too extreme. he also said he could not trust him.. No Mr. Lieberman is not a good example for the Jewish people and hac proven he is just a left wing lusting for power, political hack. Irma Epstein

Sen. Lieberman showed himself to be lacking in integrity. His reversal of opinion on a number of issues and his pandering to Louis Farrakhan and the black vote paint him as a phony politician. His public desecration of Tishah B'Av and his incredulous comments on intermarriage serve only to foster an image of a Jew in need of repentance.

The Democrates bought your vote just like Mrs. Clinton did. You should have said "no". I do not understand a people I admire voting for such an pure evil woman.

Mr.Raskas writes, "Jews can be proud of the distinguished manner in which Senator Lieberman conducted himself in this race." I pointedly disagree. Senator Lieberman's support of the gay lobby, public misrepresentation of the Torah perspective on abortion, his statement that there is nothing in Judaism that prohibits intermarriage, his furious back-pedalling from previously expressed opinions such as school vouchers and immorality in the media, et. al. point to the danger the Jewish community faces in having a Jewish candidate for high public office who's primary concern is 'what will the goyim think'.
