Reflections on Sefer Yehoshua, the Book of Joshua

by Rabbi Dovid Siegel
Rosh Kollel, Kollel Toras Chesed of Skokie of Skokie, Illinois

After serving as loyal servant to Moshe Rabbeinu for most of his life,Yehoshua assumed the mantle of leadership over the entire Jewish nation. With his major role of leading the Jews into the land of Israel, Yehoshua followed closely in the footsteps of his teacher, Moshe, adhering to every nuance of his teachings. Many passages and concepts of the Torah found in Sefer Devorim, the Book of Deuteronomy, come to life through the lessons of Yehoshua. This sefer provides the rare opportunity for one to observe Torah precepts as they materialize into their perfect form of practice and reality.

Rabbi Siegel presents Sefer Yehoshua in a series of successive lessons; studying this Book passage by passage. Text analysis and comparative reflection, as well as insights and background from the words of the Torah and Chazal, provide the foundation for these informative lessons. This series displays how belief, faith, determination, and commitment are the underpinnings of the Jewish nation’s stability and success in the land of Israel. These timely lessons are particularly helpful in appreciating our modern day struggle to maintain a land which is rightfully ours.

Rabbi Siegel is the author of the popular Haftorah series, also offered through Project Genesis. He has a unique ability to present deep concepts in a clear and understandable manner, and thus to offer fresh insights into traditional concepts and principles. This talent is especially useful during the study of Sefer Yehoshua, a text full of rich ideas related tothe travails of the Jewish people while settling into their cherished homeland.
