Parsha Halacha for the Shabbos Table

By Josh and Tammy Kruger with Rabbi Yehoshua Pfeffer

This weekly parasha series is meant to create meaningful, interactive discussions for the whole family at the Shabbos table. The  format begins with a story intended to attract the children’s attention. It presents a halachic dilemma that is connected to the weekly parasha. A discussion section follows that is organized in a question and answer format. Finally, an epilogue is presented that illustrates how the story’s characters applied the relevant halacha to their dilemma. The content will hopefully be interesting for both children and adults.

Every family has its own unique character. In order to maximize the potential of the Dvar Torah for your family, we recommend that you first review the content and ‘customize’ the text according to your audience. Consider changing the details of the story (e.g. character names) to ones that will be of greater interest to your family. While the story is meant to be appreciated by even the youngest members of the family, the questions can vary in complexity, and you should use your discretion to focus on the ones that are most likely to be appreciated by your audience.

We welcome any feedback/suggestions.

Sincerely,

Josh and Tammy Kruger

Rabbi Yehoshua Pfeffer

Rabbi Yehoshua Pfeffer was born and educated in London, England, before continuing his Torah education in Israel. He has served as a Dayan (Rabbinical Judge) for several years on a Jerusalem monetary court, and is currently the chief rabbi and modulator of an international halachah website. He has written numerous books and articles on different subjects of Jewish law and Jewish thought, lectures extensively for various forums in Israel and abroad, and has taught at several yeshivot – most recently (and currently) “Chedvat HaTorah” in Jerusalem. He received rabbinic ordination in 2007, and holds a law degree (honors) from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He resides in Jerusalem with his wife and seven children.

Josh Kruger and Tammy Nusbaum-Kruger were both born and raised in Toronto. They studied at local Jewish day schools and then in Israel at Yeshivas Kerem B’Yavneh and Midreshet Moriah respectively. They met and married as undergraduate university students. After completing their training at the University of Toronto School of Medicine, they made aliya in 2004 to the city of Modiin. Tammy works as a local family doctor, and Josh is an ophthalmologist at Hadassah Medical Center. They are blessed with six children. In an effort to create a meaningful Shabbos table experience for their family, they began to prepare divrei torah in 2011 which presented halachic dilemmas related to the weekly sedra. At the encouragement of their friends they developed their work into a formal project under the auspices of Rabbi Pfeffer.

This project is dedicated to the ilui neshama of Frumit Bat Yosef, Edith Nusbaum a”h, who exemplified devotion to family, Torah, and Shabbos.
